Health Focus is a weekly article in the News Herald featuring a Q & A with Dr. Vanek.

Be sure that you choose a board certified plastic surgeon, and one that takes time to consult with you on the advantages and disadvantages of liposuction, as well as your specific goals.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure and some people are performing these procedures who have not had the same training as a board certified plastic surgeon. Ask whether your skin tone is sufficiently elastic in the areas to be treated, because loose skin will not be improved and may require a different procedure. Results will depend on skin quality and what body region you are sculpting.

There are different lipo techniques. I prefer VASER body sculpting, which uses the latest technology of liposuction to safely dissolve fat cells to remove fat in your thighs, hips, abdomen, love handles, knees, back, arms, neck and chin; anywhere unwanted inches have stubbornly persisted despite committed diet control and exercise. VASER technology is different because it specifically targets your body fat without affecting other body tissues such as nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. Low ultrasonic energy simply bounces off these healthy and important tissues while targeting and dissolving the fat cell density. So I can select and control the contouring of each body site. The selectivity of VASER ultrasound gives you a more smooth, predictable result with faster healing versus traditional liposuction.

You have three options for anesthesia: tumescent (wide awake local), tumescent with intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. All are safe if done properly. Recovery is usually within 5-7 days and after-care is minimal.
